In addition to eating insects,
orioles also feed on fruit. If orioles nest in your area, there
are several ways to attract them to your home.
1.
Fruit
Place half an orange in a platform feeder or in a specially designed
fruit
feeder (check out your local bird shop).
2.
Nectar
Orioles will also feed on sugar water, just like hummingbirds. You
will need
a feeder that is designed to handle the orioles larger size (again,
check out
the options at your local bird shop), but the sugar solution is
the same:
Recipe
4 cups of water
1 cup of sugar
Boil the water and add the sugar. Stir until dissolved. Allow to
cool before
pouring into the feeder. A funnel will help.
3.
Grape Jelly
A simple solution of jelly and water is a favorite of orioles. Prepare
as
described below and place it in a cup on a railing or in a platform
feeder.
Recipe
1 part water to one part grape jelly
Mix the jelly with the water until it has the consistency of thick
juice.
Pour into a container and place outdoors.
REMEMBER!!
Keep your feeders clean by washing them regularly. This will help
to prevent
the spread of disease as well as eliminate ants and other insects
that might
be attracted to your feeders.
